It's no secret team members at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) refer to each other as being a part of each other's families. For Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) Shop Operator Margie Hoss and her brother Steve Jordan, that’s exactly what they are. “I really enjoy seeing my brother once in a while at work.”

Hoss has worked for NDCS for nearly 15 years. Jordan has been the plumber at Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) for seven. They both have several people they can call their best friends at work. But Hoss noted having family at work to support you is also extra special and makes her smile.

Staying busy, overcoming challenges and finding variety in her day-to-day routine are three key reasons why Registered Nurse (RN) Ina Thiel loves her work in corrections. She’s dedicated her career to assisting and treating the incarcerated population with nearly 19 years in corrections, eight-and-a-half of them working at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). “Inmates are people who have made bad choices and we as teammates have the opportunity to educate them to become a part of our communities.”

Thinking for a Change (T4C) recently graduated five men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. The class, led by Michelle Decker, Dylan Eckery and Russell Ogg, is a high-level cognitive behavioral program developed by the National Institute of Corrections. The program uses role playing to concentrate on changing the criminogenic thinking of offenders and addresses attitudes, behavior, family, friends and aggression.

“I enjoyed learning to think first and react later,” said T4C student Shannon Bigelow.

The word ‘family’ is the first thing that comes to mind when License Practical Nurse (LPN) Brenda Haith thinks about her time at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). “Mental Health Unit Caseworker Gigi Paul, medical records teammates Wendy Karas and also Katie Whiting are all my right-hand women. With mental health, security and unit staff all working together daily to make everything run smoothly, we have to have a very open line of communication between all areas so that we can be a cohesive unit.”

Haith noted her time working at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) has prepared her to...Read more

During the month of May, NDCS celebrated Correctional Officers and Teammates Month. While most activities had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, facilities made smaller gestures to recognize teammates in the meantime. The Employee Activities Committee at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center handed out bags of candy with a note attached to a bottle of water. They also offered free items off the snack cart and handed out ice cream bars and popsicles throughout the month. They still hope to celebrate with a barbeque at a later time. #EmployeeAppreciation #ThankYouRead more
