The men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) who have a passion for music get to advance their skills in these music theory groups. There are currently eight music theory groups at the facility, each playing their own choice of music including rock ‘n roll, country, hip hop, Latin, Native American drum group and a Christian choir.

Group leaders teach other individuals how to play the guitar and piano during their two-hour sessions as well.

Today, February 7th, is the TSCI Blood Drive is at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution on the American Red Cross bus at 2725 North Hwy. 50.

Having a #BFAW also known as a best friend at work goes deeper than having a friendship with another person on the job. It's about loyalty, engagement and working with someone who you know will have your back if the going gets tough. Shawn Nelson (Tile crew), Steve Jordan (Plumber) and Donn Vacek (Painter) are BFAW's at the Omaha Correctional Center. They describe the entire maintenance team as a close-knit group.

Facility Maintenance Specialist McVean works with the women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women four nights a week teaching them construction classes and working on with them on various projects around the facility. “In the last four months, these ladies have accomplished a lot of work in maintenance,” said McVean.

The first large project they tackled was cleaning the barn. In less than a week, they organized it, cleaned both floors, built shelving units and carried out every piece of trash. Incarcerated men at WEC who received first state IDs in new program.

Governor Pete Ricketts wrote a column today focusing on NDCS.

Here's a small part of it along with a picture of the first group of men at the Work Ethic Camp in McCook who received their state IDs.

"...As part of our reentry strategy, NDCS has partnered with the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on a joint venture to provide persons housed at NDCS facilities with a state ID card or driver’s license prior to release. A mobile licensing unit from the DMV regularly visits secure facilities at NDCS to issue the cards. Teammates at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) said farewell to Corporal James Graff who retired this week after 47 years of dedicated service to NDCS. When he started at NSP in 1972, the starting wage was approximately $7 an hour and he lived in the staff dormitories for $10 a month for three years. Graff has been married for 42 years and has three kids. He is looking forward to spending some of his time in retirement going to garage and estate sales.Read more

Working at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) is something Case Manager Arthur is proud of. He’s devoted 40 years of service to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) and said he’s always interested in helping the men who live at the facility. “I enjoy the different kinds of people. There’s never a dull day. I like that.”
