The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) hosted their "Fall into Reentry" fair on Oct. 23. Among some of the partners that attended were skilled trades, Vocational Rehab, several transitional living options, medical and personal care resources, the Mental Health Association of Nebraska, Parole and Probation, along with Community Corrections (for who are eligible for work release). The ladies at NCCW were excited about the information from the visiting partners and being able to ask questions and have them answered on the spot.Read more

Dr. Harbans S. Deol's article, "Strategies in managing chronic pain," was featured in the most recent edition of Corrections Today. Dr. Deol has served as medical director at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since January of 2017. See the article below.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Canteen Supervisor Chris Sieff organizes snacks at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC).

Sieff has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2012. His main job duties include managing inventory, supervising team members and incarcerated individuals and making sure canteen, special and direct orders run smoothly.

“We vary our stock as much as possible to accommodate all the different inmates and their food and hygiene needs,” Sieff said. “By listening to their needs, we are able to adapt the canteen to better serve the population.”

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) Toastmasters held their annual banquet on Oct. 15.

Incarcerated individuals presented speeches to the club and district director. Presenting these speeches allows them to take the next step in their Pathway’s Program.

The men in this program have aspirations to become better, more competent leaders through communication. Vinson Champ fulfilled his final requirement for the Advanced Communicator-Gold Award, the highest award an individual may receive on the communication side of the Toastmasters educational ladder.

The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW), held the first Defy Graduation with seventeen ladies graduating from the program. It was a great competition with amazing ideas and ‘pitches’ for their business ideas. Six months of dedication and hard work was put into the final result of strong confident ladies presenting a solid business plan (some of the ladies pitched their plan up to five times on the final day). The top five ladies were awarded prizes to help them start their own business upon release. The program is designed to help incarcerated women and men prepare for productive and successful lives in the communities...Read more

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) has a new addition to the Visiting Room. There is now a seventy-five gallon aquarium for the enjoyment of all who enter the Visiting Room.Read more

The Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) recently held a Harambee meeting. Sen. Carol Blood was one of the guest speakers in attendance on Oct. 25.Read more

The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) has a new incentive program for inmates. The Housing Unit that has the least amount of guilty misconduct reports each month gets the chance to go over to the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) yard. The LCC big yard has more activities for inmates to participate in such as football and a track. Pictured is Housing Unit 3 who received the least amount of misconduct reports for July. Some of the incarcerated men organized a game of flag football while others stretched their legs on the track.Read more
