NSP event strengthens family bonds

March 25, 2022

Laughter could be heard from children, teens, mothers, fathers and other family members in the gymnasium at the Nebraska State Penitentiary for Family Fun Day this month. The incarcerated population and their visiting family members enjoyed spending quality time together playing a variety of games.

This event gave incarcerated individuals and their loved ones an opportunity to connect as a family and help keep relationships strong.Read more

Caseworker Danny Sikyta receives MVP recognition at CCC-L

Congratulations to Caseworker Danny Sikyta—the MVP of the Month at the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L).

Sikyta is a Thinking for a Change facilitator and has led numerous classes at CCC-L, helping individuals to acquire the skills that will set them up for success. He is known as a dedicated team member with a positive attitude and a fantastic work ethic.Read more

T4C class graduates at NSP

These men have spent the last several months working together to develop skills that will serve them well in their future. Last week, they graduated from the Thinking for a Change (T4C) program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary.

T4C is designed to help participants learn social and problem-solving skills that will allow them to react to situations in positive ways. Developed by the National Institute of Corrections, this high-level cognitive behavioral program utilizes role playing to address attitudes, behavior, family, friends and change criminogenic thinking. NCCW class teaches no-drama discipline

March 21, 2022

Congratulations to these women for completing the No-Drama Discipline class at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women. Led by Parenting Coordinator Katrina Hanquist, this whole-brain approach teaches a way to calm the chaos and nurture a child’s developing mind. Participants left the class with tools to calmly and lovingly connect with their children while setting clear and consistent limits.Read more

Director's Award recognizes efforts of NDCS training staff

Across the agency, trainers are playing an invaluable role in supporting the NDCS mission. From leading pre-service classes to conducting trainings in the facilities, these team members are meeting challenges with determination and a can-do attitude.

Recently, Training Manager Ken Sturdy accepted a Director’s Award for this group's efforts to ensure teammates are equipped with the right tools and skills. Director Scott Frakes commended the team for the significant work they are doing and the difference they make.

First OCC Prison Fellowship Academy class graduates

A group of men at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) recently marked an important milestone. This cohort was the first Prison Fellowship Academy (PFA) class to graduate at OCC.

An intensive 12-month faith-based program, PFA encourages mental, physical and spiritual growth based on the development of strong moral values. This program is designed to address criminogenic risk factors and develop individuals who have the leadership potential to serve as supporters of a positive culture.

Class 222 graduates

That’s a wrap for Class 222! Congratulations to the newest NDCS teammates. This class graduated from the Staff Training Academy yesterday

➡️Twenty-three of the graduates came to NDCS from another state—a total of 15 states are represented here!

➡️Seven of the graduates are returning NDCS team members and 19 bring prior experience with other corrections departments.

➡️Five of the graduates have family members currently working at NDCS and seven have family in this class!

Class 222 wraps up final week of training

March 11, 2022

Recruits in Class 222 closed out their final full week of pre-service training with time outdoors on the range. Under the guidance of training specialists, they learned safe firearms practices and honed their skills with hands-on training.

With graduation right around the corner for this class, recruits also experienced on-the-job training this week. When these individuals get to their job posts, they will have the knowledge and practical skills to begin a successful NDCS career.
