Special dog graduates from Second Chance Pups

This week, a young dog named Hero will graduate from the Second Chance Pups training program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) and go to his forever home with the Herrera family.

Through Second Chance Pups, otherwise overlooked dogs become “canine good citizen” certified and get a second chance at a lifelong relationship with a loving family. Dogs from local shelters and rescues are carefully matched to a volunteer inmate/handler, who provides nine weeks of intense training and love.

The rehabilitative program offers an opportunity for the handlers to give back to society in a positive manner, contributing to a solution for the growing issue of uncared for and unwanted animals. In return, adoptive families are able to welcome a well-trained, socialized and healthy dog into their lives.
