The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 85th Nebraska Correctional Center for Women – “Restorative Justice Victims Impact/Empathy/Life Skills Class May 23. Seventy five percent of class participants rated the class excellent and twenty five percent rated that class as good. Eighty percent of the those who participated showed some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. On May 28, members of VFW Post #3606 and other veteran supporters rendered military honors with a twenty one gun salute in honor of veterans buried on Grasshopper Hill, which is located at Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Sixteen buried veterans have been identified in the cemetery including William Antony Fitzgerald who was a USMC Sergeant wounded in the Pacific. He was sentenced to five years at NSP in 1955 for a $30.00 bad check. He was a former middle-weight boxer and body guard to Jean Harlow and was married to Hollywood starlet Gloria Dickson.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Reentry Specialist Anthony Britten leads a reentry orientation meeting at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC). Britten has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2009. His job duties include holding meetings with the population at various points of incarceration, helping formulate parole or discharge plans, speaking with community providers about available services and helping team members understand that reentry is everyone’s job. “One of the main reasons I work in reentry is because I know that most of the individuals in our care are going to be released someday,”...Read more

The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 17th Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) “Restorative Justice -Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) Class” on May 22. Eighty nine percent of class participants rated the class Excellent! With eighty percent showing some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. Two class participants said: “I learned how to take care of my Emotional Hygiene and also how my victims really suffered". “I now know what Restorative Justice is and how I’ve impacted the lives of my victims, community and family.”Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Case Worker Pamela Voss monitors population movement at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Voss has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since January of 2018. Her main duties include securing doors and making sure people get where they need to go. On May 29, Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) celebrated its 63rd Substance Abuse Unit (SAU) graduating class. For the first time at TSCI, graduation was celebrated with family and friends in the visiting room. Guest speaker Dr. Richard Thomas spoke of committing to change and the power of family support to the ten graduates. Congratulations!Read more
