NDCS celebrates National Reentry Week

April 24 – 30, 2018 is National Reentry Week. Since 2016, the final week of April has been used to draw attention to the over 600,000 people released from US prisons to ensure they are prepared to successfully reenter their communities and become productive and law abiding citizens.

WEC population begins planting garden

Incarcerated men at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) started tilling and planting potatoes for their garden earlier this month. This year, WEC has partnered with the Mid-Plains Community College McCook Campus to enhance overall understanding of gardening.Read more

NDCS Team Member Spotlight: Douglas Clark

April 25, 2018

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Education Corporal Douglas Clark checks emails in the Education Building at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Clark has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since February 2017. His job duties include monitoring the youth, enforcing facility rules and regulations and maintaining the safety and security of both team members and incarcerated individuals. Clark is also involved in the facility’s Employee Positive Impact Council (EPIC) and is a Veteran with the United States Army. “The close knit family atmosphere is what drew me in and will keep me at NCYF,” Clark said...Read more

Students tour WEC and other McCook government facilities

April 24, 2018

Individuals from Southwest High School and the Chase County Schools toured the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) on April 10. Four incarcerated men were selected to tell visitors their stories based on their participation facility-wide. The men are all in the same Thinking for a Change (T4C) program. Groups from both schools also toured the McCook jail and courthouse.Read more

CJC completes 59th class at LCC

April 24, 2018

The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 59th “Restorative Justice (RH) – crime victims impact/empathy life skills class” at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) on April 5. Fifty percent showed empathy and/or insight into the effects their actions had on their victims/community. “The workshop teaches you how to more effectively cope with your emotional problems and how to deal with them,” one participant said.Read more

NDCS team members participate in 7th annual Susan G. Komen fundraiser

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) team members participated in the 7th annual fundraiser for the Nebraska (Great Plains) Susan G. Komen chapter in York on April 6. For the last three years, NDCS team members have teamed up with the parole board to fill at least one squad and help the cause. Over $60,000 has been donated through this event and everyone is excited for next year.Read more

NDCS Team Member Spotlight: Charles Godfrey

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Corporal Charles Godfrey supervises a post at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI).

Godfrey has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2003. His main job duties include supervising posts in addition to teaching pre-service, in-service, chemical agent, CPR/First Aid and firearm classes.

“I really enjoy working with such a variety of team members and incarcerated individuals,” Godfrey said. “I like that no day is the same and I can continually learn new things. I really like when I can train fellow staff to help make our job safer.”
