Bradley Schernikau received the 2019 Excellence in Mentoring award with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). He’s been with NDCS for 13 years as a Canteen Supervisor.

“It’s nice to be recognized and it’s humbling,” said Schernikau. “It’s nice to be recognized by your peers.”

Schernikau was nominated for his positive and professional attitude and passes that onto new hires through giving them an excellent learning environment as an instructor and mentor. Religious and Volunteer Coordinator Geri Knight received the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Outstanding Ambassador Award on Friday, May 22, 2019, for her continuous effort to promote the credibility of not only the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) but NDCS as a whole. Families and close friends gathered at the Nebraska State Penitentiary on April 12th and April 19th, 2019 to strengthen bonds and spend quality time with their incarcerated loved ones.

These visits were unique from a typical visit to the Penitentiary because they were Family Fun Days. These special days occur a few times a year for incarcerated individuals to deeper connect with their loved ones... and to have a little bit of fun with them too!

Considering 93 percent of incarcerated individuals will make the transition back to the community, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) programming that helps them become successful outside is essential. In order to hold programming, NDCS needs volunteers.

“Volunteers provide a unique means to assist with each individual’s success,” said Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) Warder Taggert Boyd at the annual LCC Volunteer Banquet. “Incarcerated individuals tend to cherish volunteer-led programs and have better participation rates,” said Boyd.

A huge milestone was reached by 14 ladies at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on April 17th, 2019. Business coaches, family, staff, and members of the Parole Board all cheered and celebrated the 14 incarcerated women's completion of the RISE program.

RISE, an organization that advocates for successful reentry for incarcerated individuals, has an innovative program that focuses on character development, job readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Program graduates receive a Certificate in Career Readiness from the University of Nebraska Omaha's School of Business Administration.

Congratulations to the 18 men who graduated from the Nebraska State Penitentiary School on May 6th, 2019. Graduates encompassed men who either completed GEDs or finished their high school curriculum while incarcerated. Each graduate overcame numerous barriers on their unique journey towards completion.
