On Sept. 1, Danny Madrid visited the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Madrid was formally incarcerated and now teaches at UNO and UNL in Criminology and Criminal Justice. He is one of the role models for change for the Transformation Project, which helps incarcerated individuals develop a foundation for learning and motivation to change through a process of self-reflection and goal setting. Madrid met with the incarcerated youth to tell his story, and he will be helping them paint a mural. The Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) held an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Core Math class graduation on Sept. 19. Thirteen incarcerated men completed the 12-week course, taught by Matt Bliemeister. This is the second of three courses offered by ABC. To participate, students were required to achieve an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour certification in general industries and an OSHA 10-hour certification in construction. Each graduate is now eligible to attend ABC’s Core Curriculum course starting later this month. Congratulations, graduates!Read more

Incarcerated men at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) saw great success with pumpkins and other crops in their garden this year. They plan to decorate and paint pumpkins, which will then be displayed in the administration building. Other pumpkins will be used for decorations around the facility, gifts for visiting families, pumpkin pies and donations to local grade schools. In addition to these pumpkins, the gardeners at WEC produced 19 pounds of radishes, 35 pounds of rhubarb, 672 pounds of zucchini, 512 pounds of yellow squash, 645 pounds of corn, 497 pounds of potatoes, 372 pounds of cucumbers, 56 pounds of peppers, 23 pounds of...Read more

Incarcerated women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) received a lesson in understanding the importance of hopefulness on Aug. 24. Julia Cook, of Fremont, Neb., shared her message to a group of about 100 ladies. She said hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible. “Hope is like oxygen; it is essential to life," Cook said. “It’s a choice to be hopeful or hopeless." Cook shared her view of ‘a glass half full’ in that it is refillable. “Your future is spotless,” she said. “When the world gives up on you, hope says try it one more time.” Cook ensured listeners that there are endless...Read more

In conjunction with Christian Heritage, The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) hosted a Father/Daughter Dance in the visiting room on Aug. 28. Thirteen incarcerated men completed the programming necessary to participate in this family bonding event. The fathers helped decorate the room prior to their daughters' arrival.Read more

The Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) held its first Thinking For a Change (T4C) graduation on Sept. 5, 2017. Case Manager Rowan Taylor and Case Worker Chandell Tillman facilitated the class, engaging students and helping them believe in themselves. This class started with 13 students and all 13 graduated.
