The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) held its first Leadership Academy graduation of the year on Feb. 16. Jason Jackson, Governor Pete Ricketts’ chief human resources officer, spoke with the class on Feb. 15. He discussed leadership from his perspective, noting that his “true north” is public service. Jackson said his current role allows him to blend his military experience with his private sector experience as he works to add value to whatever situation he is in. Twenty-seven incarcerated women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) attended a kick-off event for Defy Ventures' "CEO of Your New Life" program on Feb. 15. Citing the women in his life for many of his successes, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Director Scott R. Frakes was ecstatic to introduce Defy to the women at NCCW. "It's the strong women who are going to help fix America," he said. NCCW marks the fourth facility in Nebraska and just the third women's facility in the country to offer the program. Process Improvement Coordinator (PIC) Eric Kasik maps out an Accounts Payable Receivable (APR) process at Central Office. Kasik has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since November 2017. His main job duties include forming workgroups comprised of NDCS team members, observing current processes and helping teams implement their solutions. “Process improvement puts action to the day-to-day things that frustrate people,” Kasik said. “I love seeing change, being a part of the problem solving process and making things easier for people.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more

He is currently assigned in a relief position, which means team members will see his smiling face throughout the facility. The Community Justice Center recently completed its 56th Restorative Justice – Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) class at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC). "It was helpful because it taught me how to not repeat the crime and harm I've done to others," one participant said.Read more

Maintenance Specialist James Corwin helps an incarcerated individual cut a piece of lexan, which will be used for doors, windows and TV covers at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC). Corwin has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2004. Sanitation and Canine Corporal Amy Wander supervises incarcerated men, family members and volunteers during the recent Defy Ventures graduation at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). Wander has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2000. Her main job duties include supervising the population, cleaning of the facility and dogs in the Domesti-Pups program, in addition to teaching the canine class. “I enjoy watching all of these guys change,” Wander said. “It makes me feel like I’m accomplishing my job in helping to get these guys ready to reenter society.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more
