Leadership is the ability to translate a team's vision into a viable solution. What better way to learn how to lead than from someone who’s already been there? Last month NDCS celebrated 19 graduates from the 19th cohort of Leadership Academy, a training first launched in 2017.

The 40-hour academy is geared towards front-line supervisors and mid-management. You’re probably thinking, what does this fact have to do with NDCS? Well that’s a great question! These little sticky notes are an integral part of process improvement projects here at NDCS.

During the Measure (M) phase of the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC methodology, project teams formed by a process improvement coordinator and other NDCS teammates create a process map that visually represents the activities performed during a particular process. After completing Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training, these men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary are eager to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them.

The relationships formed through IPS serve as a vehicle with which peers can begin moving toward pro-social change. Individuals learn to have a connection with one another that is both supportive and transformative—while encouraging accountability in their current relationships and the community.
