NDCS Team Member Spotlight: Donald Hardy

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tool Control Corporal Donald Hardy takes inventory of tools the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). Hardy has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2001. His main job duties include storing, replacing and taking inventory for approximately 12,000 tools within the facility. “I’ve worked in some kind of construction my whole life,” Hardy said. “I’ve always worked with tools and I really enjoy the people I work with. NDCS Honor Guard Team members travel to Pennsylvania to honor fallen sargent

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Honor Guard Team members Jill Ourada and Shar Most traveled to Pennsylvania this week to pay respect to Sergeant Mark Baserman of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, who lost his life in the line of duty on Feb. 26. Ourada and Most are pictured here with Honor Guard Team members from South Dakota and Michigan. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Administrative Assistant and Public Information Officer Lori Keller responds to emails at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). Keller has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since May 2017. Her main job duties include organizing facility programming, scheduling teammates, facilitating Vocational and Life Skills (VLS) grantee classes and coordinating public information and media visits. “I like it because it’s an opportunity to help people,” Keller said. “I do a lot of things, but the programming is a way to help the ladies not reoffend. Fire in McCook comes close to WEC

March 9, 2018

The northwest section of McCook, Neb. was evacuated due to a quickly moving grass fire on March 6. The Work Ethic Camp (WEC) was in the direct path of the fire, which originated about a quarter of a mile directly north of the facility. While close, the fire did not impact the facility. WEC team members and incarcerated individuals were not in danger. “Thankfully we did not have to evacuate,” WEC Warden Pam Morello said. “It was closer than any of us would have liked. Creighton University students discuss moral philosophy with incarcerated youth at NCYF

Students from Creighton University’s philosophy department have been visiting incarcerated youth at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) to discuss moral philosophy. During their sessions, students individually met with NCYF youth and discussed questions including: What is forgiveness? What acts can be forgiven? What is trust? If you could teach everyone in the world one idea, what idea would have the biggest positive impact on humanity? Is it more important to help yourself, help your family, help your society or help the world? And what should be the goal of humanity? This is the second year that NCYF has worked...Read more

Inner Circle hosts speakers at LCC

Inner Circle core members at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) hosted Don Nevins from the Lincoln Parole Office, Jeffrey Beran from the Omaha Parole Office, and Rafael Hernandez with the Reentry Team to present to a group of approximately 25 incarcerated men on Feb. 21. The speakers presented on the parole process and opportunities available to people transitioning through community corrections and work release. Second Alpha class at OCC graduates

March 7, 2018

The second Alpha class at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) graduated on Feb. 13. Alpha is a 12-week self-help course based on Biblical concepts. Each class consists of three volunteers, approximately four core members (graduates of the program) and about twenty participants. The program utilizes a meal to show the equality of each individual, various videos on the subject of each lesson, a lecture by a volunteer and then small group discussion.
