What was an empty room last week morphed into a packed house today. It was the first day for orientation in 2022 at NDCS. The class includes a number of returnees to the agency, to which Dir. Frakes offered an enthusiastic, “Welcome home!” This class also includes those with law enforcement, corrections and military experience. During his address, Dir. Frakes touched on increased compensation, expanded tuition reimbursement and other opportunities for those looking at a career in correctional services. Training for these participants will last six weeks. The next agency orientation is quickly filling up.

Known for his excellent rapport with the population and fellow team members, Corporal (Cpl.) Don Hardy is always willing to help out other staff whenever and wherever he is needed. Cpl. Hardy was recently recognized as the December Employee of the Month at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). If your pillowcase could talk, what would it say? Women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) recently spent an afternoon exploring this question and putting their creative mark on personal pillowcases. Thirty-one women participated in this fun and introspective activity.

The event was organized by Water Walkers, a NCCW peer-led support group that seeks to help individuals with a challenging past see the possibility of new, positive beginnings.
