Nebraska State Penitentiary honored to watch church choir perform

December 16, 2019

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) church was packed this weekend when 40 Plymouth choir members from the First Plymouth Congregational Church filled up the stage and held two different choir performances for the men at NSP.

The choir invited the men to sing holiday songs with them throughout the concert.

At the end of the performance, the audience gave the choir a standing ovation and thanked choir members for volunteering their time to come sing.

NDCS director gets makeover for good cause

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Director Scott R. Frakes made good on his promise this week to let whichever facility raised $1,000 the fastest, to shave off his facial hair in a Raise it to Shave it competition. This was one of the many ways the director encouraged NDCS teammates to raise money for United Way's charitable giving campaign. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women won the competition. Director Frakes said his goodbyes to his mustache and goatee after having them for nearly 30 years. We asked if he plans on growing the facial hair back. He said he's starting tomorrow!

NSP awards high school diplomas

The Nebraska State Penitentiary celebrated the achievements of six men on November 25th at a commencement ceremony. Five men earned their State of Nebraska diplomas while one completed his high school diploma at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility.

Former Doane University President Fred Brown, spoke to the graduates and guests about the importance of this milestone, the challenges they’ve overcome, and lessons they’ve learned along the way about perseverance.

Four men graduate Body Masters Fitness program

December 11, 2019

Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility volunteer T.C. Collins has graduated another round of Body Masters Fitness program participants! Thirteen young men began the program. Four men successfully completed this full round of training. Each person who graduates, shows determination, the ability to set goals and meet them, along with hard work. Team Member Spotlight: Unit Manager Mark Danner

With more than four decades dedicated to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS), Unit Manager Mark Danner was recognized for his years of service for keeping people safe. Danner began his career right out of high school as an officer. He worked at the reformatory for a year and a half before it closed down. “I had the honor of being the person who ran turnkey when the last group of incarcerated individuals were moved out to the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC).”

TSCI teammates celebrate the holidays

The Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) Employee Activity Committee (EAC) hosted their annual holiday party on Tuesday, December 3rd. The TSCI EAC members wanted to make sure every TSCI teammate knew their dedication and daily contributions were recognized and appreciated by all. EAC pulled out all the stops this year with a delicious catered meal and two gifts for every TSCI staff member. Months of planning and countless hours of preparation, shopping, and execution went into pulling off this event.Read more
